What Should I Consider If Public School Is Not a Good Fit for My Child?

20, Apr 2021

There are many different ways to approach life and learning. Because of this, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to education. Unfortunately, public school programs treat education as if there is one approach that is right for every child. This can be frustrating for parents who find that the approach common in public schools is not a good fit for their child. If you have discovered that public school is not a good fit for your child, what should you do? The good news is that there are options beyond public school if you find that it simply is not a good fit for your child. It is possible to find an alternative to public school that works for your child and is a good fit for your family.

Reasons public school may not be a fit for your child

Why doesn’t public school work for some children? It can be difficult for children to get what they need in public school. The number of students in each classroom can make it difficult for teachers to give any type of individualized attention to your child. In addition, the model providing the exact education to all students means that some students are left waiting for others to catch up while others may not get all the help they need. There simply are not enough resources in the typical public school classroom to meet the unique learning needs of each student. Gifted students can find themselves with a lot of downtime in the classroom, which can lead to behavior issues. Any child with learning differences can have difficulty thriving in a program that does not have the time or resources to work with students individually.

Options to consider instead of public school

As a parent, you have options when it comes to your child’s education. If public school is not a good fit for your child, an excellent alternative is a private school. Private programs have more freedom than public schools. Private schools are not governed by the state in the same way as public programs. Because of this, private schools can choose which educational philosophy under which to operate. You can explore the educational philosophy of the various private schools in your area to find one that is a good fit for your child. Private schools can also provide your child with more individualized attention inside the classroom. Private programs often intentionally keep class sizes small in order to ensure that the teacher has time to spend working with each student individually. The variety of private schools out there makes it possible to find one that is a good fit for any student.

Public school does not work for every student. Fortunately, there are high-quality private schools that can meet the unique needs of your child. Take some time to explore what the private schools in your area have to offer in order to provide your child with an education that is a good fit.
